SUMMARY

When you upgrade from Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 to SBS 2000, a minimum of 4 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space is required (when all the programs are selected) for the upgrade to be completed successfully. Under certain circumstances, the amount of free space may be limited on the current SBS 4.5-based server. This article describes how to increase available disk space, specifically on the boot partition (where the Winnt.sbs or Winnt folder resides), so that you can upgrade to SBS 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the procedures described in this section to increase the amount of free space on the SBS-based computer before you upgrade to SBS 2000.

Move or Remove the SBS 4.5 Client Computer Programs

The SBS 4.5 client programs reside in the ClientApps folder, which is located on the system partition of the SBS-based server. This folder contains Microsoft Fax Client, Microsoft Modem Sharing Client, Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4, (this service pack may not be required after you upgrade to SBS 2000.

To move the ClientApps folder to another partition:

  1. Start the SBS Administrator console, click Online Guide, click to expand Shared Folders, and then click Managing Shared Folders.
  2. In the right pane, click Move ClientApps, Users, and FaxStore Shared Folders, and then click Move ClientApps folder.
  3. After the wizard starts, follow the instructions to move this folder.

In some cases, there may not be enough free space on another partition to move this folder. In that case, it is possible to delete the ClientApps folder from this partition. However, if there is not another partition to move these files to, you may not have enough free disk space to continue the SBS upgrade.

NOTE: The ClientApps folder may be the installation point for other programs to be installed on SBS-based clients (for example, programs that did not come with SBS, and that were added to the SBS-based server). In this case, if you remove the ClientApps folder, SBS clients are not able install these programs.

Move the Users Shared Folder

The Users shared folder contains the default shared folders for each user that is created. If users are saving their data to this folder by using the shortcut that is created on their desktop, you may be able to save a considerable amount of space if you move this folder to another partition.

To move the Users shared folder to another partition:

  1. Start the SBS Administrator console, click Online Guide, click to expand Shared Folders, and then click Managing Shared Folders.
  2. In the right pane, click Move ClientApps, Users, and FaxStore Shared Folders, and then click click Move Users folder.
  3. After the wizard starts, follow the instructions to move this folder.

Move the FaxStore Folder

The FaxStore folder, which is located in the root of the system partition, is used to store incoming faxes. This folder can be moved to another partition.

To move the FaxStore folder to another partition:

  1. Start the SBS Administrator console, click Online Guide, click to expand Shared Folders, and then click Managing Shared Folders.
  2. In the right pane, click Move ClientApps, Users, and FaxStore Shared Folders, and then click Move FaxStore folder.
  3. After the wizard starts, follow the instructions to move this folder.

Use Microsoft Exchange Server Performance Optimizer

You can use Exchange Server 5.5 Performance Optimizer to move the private and public information stores to another partition:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Microsoft Exchange, and then click Microsoft Exchange Optimizer.
  2. When the Performance Optimizer wizard starts, click Next.

The wizard shuts down the necessary services.
  3. Type the company information, and then click Next.

Performance Optimizer starts. For additional information about what settings you should use, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  4. When the disk analysis procedure is completed, click Next.
  5. Type the location of the Exchange Server components, and then click Next.

You can increase the amount of free disk space significantly if you move the private information store and the public information store.
  6. Click to select the Move Files Automatically check box.

After the move is completed, click Finish to restart the services that were stopped at the beginning of this procedure.

Move the Windows NT Paging File and Spool File

You can move the Paging file and Spool file to another partition to increase the amount of free disk space.

Increase the Amount of Free Disk Space After You Upgrade the Operating System to Windows 2000

After the operating system upgrade section of the upgrade procedure is completed, you can increase the amount of free disk space for the program upgrades. To do so, after you upgrade the operating system to Microsoft Windows 2000, empty the Temp folder on the system partition. Numerous folders, such as SITxxxxx.tmp, may be left behind by the upgrade.

If you use media other than SBS 2000 media to install Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may be able to remove the service pack Source folder, and the Uninstall folder.
