SYMPTOMS

Dfsutil.exe is a utility that administrators can use to query and troubleshoot Distributed File System (DFS) at the command prompt. Dfsutil.exe is included with the Windows 2000 Support Tools in the retail version of Windows 2000. Some problems in that version of Dfsutil.exe might cause serious damage to the DFS metadata; because of those problems, that version of Dfsutil.exe is not a viable tool for building a large DFS namespace. That version of Dfsutil.exe has the following attributes:

Date Time Version Size File name
   ----------------------------------------------------
   12/04/1999 06:29pm 5.0.2191.1 99,600 Dfsutil.exe

The only alternative to the Dfsutil.exe utility is the Dfscmd.exe utility. Unfortunately, if you use the Dfscmd.exe utility to create large DFS namespaces, it can be very time consuming.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the updated version of Dfsutil.exe (which fixes theknown problems) that is scheduled to be included on the Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) CD in the Support\Tools\Support.cab file.

The updated version of Dfsutil.exe is also scheduled to be available for download from the following Microsoft Web site after Windows 2000 SP2 is released:

http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000/downloads/recommended/sp2/default.asp

All of the untested functionality has been removed from the updated version of Dfsutil.exe. In addition, several problems with the most useful features have been fixed in the updated version of Dfsutil.exe, especially the import and export of DFS metadata. The updated version of this utility provides a much safer way to create large DFS namespaces.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
