XL2002: Unable to Quit Excel When the Program Is Running in Reduced Functionality Mode

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to quit Microsoft Excel 2002, you may be unable to do so.

When you click the Exit command on the File menu or click the Close button, nothing happens.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do both of the following:

1. You configure Excel to load an add-in that runs a macro when the program quits.
   

NOTE: An add-in cannot be loaded after Excel is running in reduced functionality mode.

-and-

1. You then start Excel in reduced functionality mode.

Macros are prevented from running when Excel is in reduced functionality mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard to activate Excel 2002.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps, as appropriate to your operating system.

In Microsoft Windows 2000

1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
2. In the Windows Task Manager dialog box, click Microsoft Excel - workbook on the Applications tab, , and then click End Task.
   
   You receive the following message:

   The system cannot end this program because it is waiting
   for a response from you.

3. Click End Now.

In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
2. In the Windows NT Task Manager dialog box, click Microsoft Excel - workbook on the Applications tab, and then click End Task.
   
   You receive the following message:

   This Windows application cannot respond to the End Task
   request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or
   it may have stopped executing.

3. Click End Task.

In Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 98

1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
2. In the Close Program dialog box, click Microsoft Excel, and then click End Task.
   
   You receive the following message:

   This program is not responding. It may be busy, waiting for
   a response from you, or it may have stopped running.

3. Click End Task.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
