SYMPTOMS
When you are running a management agent in Delta mode and you try to use the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) clients such as Account Joiner or Compass to search for entries in the metaverse, these clients may seem to stop responding (hang). If you view the logging details while the computer is not responding, you notice that the timeframe that the computer is unresponsive corresponds with the examining deltas process. Other LDAP clients may also stop responding during this timeframe. Aditionally, you may receive the following message when you try to search by using the Account Joiner utility.
Do you want to cancel the LDAP operation?
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the Zoomserv\Data\Db\Viatran.idx file is too large. When the Viatran.idx file grows, the time that it takes the computer to search the index file increases. When the Viatran files are being examined, an exclusive lock is put on the database. As a result, the LDAP clients seem unresponsive. Typically, you do not experience this behavior until the file is really large. A file size threshold that determines when performance degradation occurs is not documented; however, when this problem was discovered, the Viatran.idx file was over 350 megabytes (MB).
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next version of Microsoft Metadirectory Services that contains this hotfix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
