SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the Catalog Wizard to create a foldover booklet in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac, in Microsoft Word X for Mac, and in Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac.

MORE INFORMATION

The following image is an example of how a foldover booklet appears. The booklet is printed on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. Then the pages are folded in half to simulate a book. The resulting booklet is also known as a digest, because it is printed on standard letter-size paper folded in half.

Create a foldover booklet

Word 2001

  1. In the Project Gallery, click Menus & Catalogs, and then click Catalogs.
  2. Click the thumbnail of the catalog style that you want to use, and then click OK.
  3. On the Layout & Title tab, type the number of pages that you want to print. The wizard prompts you to enter a number that is divisible by four. The maximum number of pages is 996.

Type information in the other fields, as needed.

  1. The Special Catalog Items check boxes let you make the first page a cover page, with a mailing label on the last page.
  2. On the Page Content tab, specify the content for each page, except the first and last pages (if you selected both of the check boxes in the Special Catalog Items section of the Layout & Title tab).
  3. On the Theme & Color tab, you can change the theme of the booklet and its color scheme.
  4. When you finish making your choices, click Save and Exit.

Word X and Word 2004

  1. In the Project Gallery, click New, click Menus & Catalogs, and then click Catalogs.
  2. Click the thumbnail of the catalog style that you want to use, and then click OK or Open.
  3. On the Content tab, type the number of pages that you want to print. The wizard prompts you to enter a number that is divisible by four. The maximum number of pages is 996.

    Type information in the other fields, as needed.
  4. If you want, choose one or both of the following options on the Content tab:
    • To make the first page of the booklet a cover page, click to select the Make first page a cover check box.
    • To leave room for a mailing label on the last page of the booklet, click to select the Leave room for a mailing label check box.
    Note In earlier versions of Word, these options were called Special Catalog Items.
  5. On the Layout tab, specify the content for each page. If you clicked to select both of the check boxes at the bottom of the Content tab, do not specify the content for the first and last pages.
  6. On the Theme tab, you can change the theme of the booklet and its color scheme.
  7. When you finish making your choices, click Save and Exit.

Print the booklet

If your printer is capable of automatic duplex printing, set it up to print on both sides of the page.

If your printer is not equipped with a duplexing module or duplexing capabilities, follow these steps:

  1. Click Print on the File menu.
  2. Change the printer options from General to Microsoft Word.

    Note In Word X and in Word 2004, this option is named Copies & Pages instead of General.
  3. Change the page range from All pages in range to Odd pages.
  4. Click Print. All the odd pages of your publication will be printed.
  5. Take the printed pages and flip them along the long edge of the page, as in the following illustration:
    Flip in this direction -->
        -------------------------
       | p4        |||     .  p1 |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
        -------------------------

        -------------------------
       | p1 |      |||     .| p4 |
       |---- .     |||     . ----|
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
       |     .     |||     .     |
        -------------------------

    Put these pages back into the paper tray/hopper, making sure that you keep the top edge of the page pointed in the right direction.
  6. Click Print on the File menu.
  7. Change the printer options from General to Microsoft Word.
  8. Change the page range from All pages in range to Even pages.
  9. If your printer outputs the pages face down instead of face up, click Word Options; otherwise skip to step 11.
  10. On the Print tab, select the Reverse print order check box, and then click OK.
  11. Click Print. All the even pages of your publication will be printed on the reverse side of the corresponding odd pages.
