PPT2002: PowerPoint Appears to Stop Responding While It Opens HTML File

Article ID: 285411

Article Last Modified on 1/29/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q285411

SYMPTOMS

When you open an HTML file in Microsoft PowerPoint, the program may appear to stop responding (hang) for several minutes.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of the way that PowerPoint opens HTML files. PowerPoint fully opens HTML files before responding to other actions, such as mouse-clicks. If the HTML file includes large pictures, the process of opening the pictures can cause PowerPoint to appear to stop responding (hang). After the HTML file is opened, PowerPoint runs normally.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. Open the HTML file.
  3. On the File menu, click Save As.
  4. In the Save as type box, click the drop-down arrow, and then select Web Archive, single file (*.mht).
  5. Select a local drive, and then click Save.
  6. Start PowerPoint.
  7. On the File menu, click Open.
  8. In the Files of type box, click the arrow, and then select Web Pages and Web Archives.
  9. Select the MHT file that you saved in step 5, and then click Open.

The Web archive file integrates all supporting information, including graphics and other files, into a single file. PowerPoint opens the file on a local drive faster than it opens the HTML file and large pictures across the network.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
