SYMPTOMS
During a migration from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server, Active Directory user objects are created and become mailbox-enabled. If the Primary Windows NT Account attribute in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory is populated with an account that the Exchange 2000 server Active Directory does not contain, some attribute information may not be migrated consistently.
Certain attributes of a mailbox, like the home-mta and home-mdb attributes, are replicated back to the Exchange Server 5.5 directory (to allow coexistence and to maintain mail flow). However, some attributes, in particular the Primary Windows NT Account attribute, may not be updated in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because no attribute in Active Directory is mapped back to the Primary Windows NT Account attribute in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory. This attribute is not necessary for migration and coexistence.

You can log on to the mailbox by using the account in the Microsoft Windows NT domain or the account in Active Directory.
During a migration from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server, you maintain two separate directories: the Exchange Server 5.5 directory and Active Directory. The Connection Agreements that you configure on the Active Directory Connector (ADC) control the way that data is replicated between these directories.
During the migration process, Active Directory user objects are created and become mailbox-enabled. After the migration of a mailbox, all storage for this user object is on the Exchange 2000 server.
