SYMPTOMS

If your computer is configured as an Internet Connection Sharing client, your modem may not automatically disconnect when you quit Microsoft Internet Explorer or any other Internet program. This symptom occurs if you use a modem that is shared remotely on a Windows 2000-based computer that is configured as an Internet Connection Sharing host.

This behavior occurs because with Internet Connection Sharing, you cannot configure a modem to automatically disconnect when you quit a program on the client computer that uses the connection.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, make sure that the modem does not remain connected indefinitely:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  2. Right-click the connection, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Options tab.
  4. Under Redialing options, in the Idle time before hanging up box, click a value other than the default Never value to configure a time to wait before the connection disconnects.

If no activity is detected, the modem disconnects after the period of time that you specify. After the modem disconnects, you can establish a new connection.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The Internet Connection Sharing client/host connection is a peer-to-peer network connection and does not use Dial-Up Networking. The client computer only forwards requests. It is not aware that it is not directly communicating to the Internet, nor it is aware that the host forwards the request by using a Dial-Up Networking connection to the Internet service provider. The client computer cannot disconnect a Dial-Up Networking connection when the connection is no longer necessary.
