SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to open an e-mail message that contains a text (.txt) file attachment in Outlook 2002, you may receive a security message that gives you Open and Save options, instead of Save and Cancel options.
This behavior occurs even though you installed Outlook 2000 Service Release 1 (SR1) and added txt to the following registry key before upgrading to Outlook 2002:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\
Security\AddWarningFileTypes
NOTE: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, change the registry txt value to .txt, and then restart Outlook:
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate the .txt value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\
Security\AddWarningFileTypes
NOTE: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.
- On the Edit menu, click String, type .txt, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
