This article was previously published under Q276233

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run the System Configuration Editor (Sysedit.exe) tool, you may receive the following error message:

Windows cannot find 'sysedit'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Sysedit.exe is not included with Windows Me.

MORE INFORMATION

Sysedit.exe is a tool that is included with Microsoft Windows 3.x, Microsoft Windows 95, and Microsoft Windows 98. You can use Sysedit.exe to edit the following system configuration files:

  • Config.sys
  • Autoexec.bat
  • System.ini
  • Win.ini
  • Protocol.ini

Although Sysedit.exe is not included with Windows Me, Sysedit.exe remains on your computer after an upgrade to Windows Me.

To modify these files use the Microsoft System Configuration (Msconfig) utility. For information about Msconfig, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
