SYMPTOMS
When an Exchange 2000 Server user sends an e-mail message to an Exchange Server 5.5 recipent on a Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 computer who is represented as a contact in Active Directory, the Exchange 2000 Server user may receive a non-delivery report (NDR) message that is similar to the following:

A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, make sure that Windows NT Server 4.0 domain users are represented as at least disabled users in Active Directory:
- In Control Panel, double-click Services, right-click the Active Directory Connector (ADC), and then stop the ADC.
- Remove the Exchange Server 5.5 ADC-Global-Names object for the Exchange Server 5.5 and Windows NT Server 4.0 recipients by using one of the following two methods:
- Use the Exchange Server Administrator program in raw mode to delete the ADC-Global-Names object attribute for each mailbox.
-or- - Use the following procedure:
- Use the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program to run a Directory Export to create a .csv file.
- Use a text editor or Microsoft Excel to open the file that you created, add a final column heading named "ADC-Global-Names", and then save the file. For example, use the column heading: Hide from AB, ADC-Global-Name (if you use Excel leave out the comma).
- Export to this file, verify that the ADC-Global-Name value is populated, replace the contents of that column with ~DEL, and then import the .csv file back into the directory.
- Use the Exchange Server Administrator program in raw mode to delete the ADC-Global-Names object attribute for each mailbox.
- Delete the contacts in Active Directory that have replicated over this Connection Agreement.
- Upgrade your Exchange 2000 ADC to the latest build (later than build number 4408).
- Click the Advanced tab of the Connection Agreement, and then set the Windows NT Server 4.0 mailboxes to replicate to Active Directory as disabled users.
- Set the Connection Agreement to replicate at the scheduled time.
- Start the ADC service.
After you perform these steps, the Exchange Server 5.5 and Windows NT Server 4.0 recipients replicate as disabled users to Active Directory, and you can send e-mail to those recipients successfully.

The Exchange Server 5.5 and Windows NT Server 4.0 recipients were replicated to the Active Directory as contacts. Exchange 2000 Server no longer sends e-mail to Windows NT Server 4.0 recipients that are represented as contacts in Active Directory. This changed after Exchange 2000 Server build number 4408.
This article does not apply to contacts that are created in Exchange 2000 Server itself; this article only applies to Windows NT Server 4.0 users that are replicated into Active Directory through the ADC as contacts. E-mail messages can be sent to native Exchange 2000 Server contacts without any problem.
