SUMMARY
Windows Movie Maker contains a feature that creates a backup of the collection file. The collection file is located in Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Movie Maker and is named Windows Movie Maker.col. When you close the collection file after you have performed five edits on the collection, Movie Maker prompts you to make a backup of your collections file.
If you click Yes, Movie Maker creates a copy of the Windows Movie Maker.col file. By default, the backup file is in the My Documents\My Videos folder and is name named Windows Movie Maker Backup.bak. However, you are given the option to name and locate the file where you choose.
If Windows Movie Maker fails to initialize the database, you are prompted to restore the backup. You receive the following message:
Your collections Database has been corrupted. Click Yes to restore the database from a backup. Click No to create a new, empty database. Click Cancel to exit Windows Movie Maker.
MORE INFORMATION
The collections database contains no content. It contains pointers to source material and bitmap images representing those pointers. Backing up the Collections database does not preserve the content itself. Source files should be backed up independently and restored to the same location where they were imported into the collection file.
