SYMPTOMS

Windows Media Player versions 7 and later report duration differently than does Windows Media Player 6.4.

CAUSE

If a file is not started automatically, Windows Media Player 7 and later do not open the file header and cannot obtain the duration of the file. After you start playing the file, Windows Media Player can determine the duration of the file and report it correctly. Microsoft made this change for performance reasons.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
