SYMPTOMS
The Guard function does not work in the ShapeSheet text direction cell.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Visio 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Visio 2000 SR-1.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior
- On the Tools menu, point to Options, and then click Regional Settings.
- For Vertical Text, select Show, and then click OK.
- Drag a shape to the drawing page, or create your own shape.
- Type some text into the shape, and then click Show ShapeSheet on the Window menu.
- In the Text Block section, set the TextDirection cell to GUARD(0).
- In the drawing, click the Text tool, right-click the shape, click View, and then click View as Vertical.
Note that although the text has been guarded, the text changes to vertical text.
