Error Received After Upgrade: Windows 2000 Contains an Earlier Version of Internet Explorer Components

SUMMARY

If you first install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, and then try to upgrade to Microsoft Windows 2000, you receive the following warning after the completion of the Readiness Analyzer:

This program runs on Windows 98. However, because of new features in the operating system, additional configuration may be necessary for your programs to run correctly. For more information click Details. To continue without making changes, click Run Programs.

If you click Details, you receive the following warning:

Upgrade to Windows 2000
Windows 2000 contains an earlier version of Internet Explorer components. Please uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 before proceeding with the upgrade. Once Windows 2000 is installed, you can update the Internet Explorer components by installing Internet Explorer 5.5. again.

If you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 to Microsoft Windows 2000 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 installed, most of the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 files are replaced during the upgrade process. After you perform the upgrade, you will have Internet Explorer version 5 on your computer. However, some of the Internet Explorer 5.5 files may remain, which can lead to unexpected results.

The correct installation sequence is as follows:

  1. Remove Internet Explorer 5.5.
  2. Upgrade to Windows 2000.
  3. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5.
