SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert or attach a database by using an ODBC driver and Microsoft Query, you may receive one of the following error messages.

Case 1

When you attempt to insert a database file, you may receive the following error message:

Word was unable to open the data source.

Case 2

When you attempt to attach a data source by using Microsoft Query, you may receive the following error message:

Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression filename.field = filename.field.

When you click Details, the following error message appears:

ODBC error:[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression filename.field = filename.field'.

Sql State: 37000
Return Code: SQL_ERROR

CAUSE

The Microsoft Query SQL string exceeds 255 characters. Word truncates the SQL query string at 255 characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move your data source files to the root of the following folder (or similar folder) in Microsoft Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\
