SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Project 2000 file in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, and Microsoft Project 2000 is not currently running, Microsoft Project 2000 may unexpectedly open in the background.

If you switch to this instance of Microsoft Project, it has no menus, toolbars, or other typical user interface elements. In addition, you may experience the following behavior, depending on your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 2000

The empty Microsoft Project 2000 window opens behind the Internet Explorer window, and the project opens in Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Windows NT 4 and Microsoft Windows 98

The empty Microsoft Project 2000 window opens in the foreground (in front of Internet Explorer), and the project that you wanted is not opened in either Internet Explorer or in Microsoft Project.

In addition, in Windows NT, if you try to close the empty Microsoft Project window (click the "X" in the upper-right corner) the Save dialog box appears, prompting you to save "Project 1". The dialog box remains open until you close Internet Explorer, even if you close the project that you opened in Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • In Microsoft Project, you clear the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box in the Security dialog box. (On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Security.)

-and-

  • While Microsoft Project is not running, you open a project in Internet Explorer 5.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, change the macro security setting. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Microsoft Project, point to Macro on the Tools menu, and then click Security.
  2. Click the Trusted Sources tab.
  3. Click to select the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box.
  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior does not cause Microsoft Project to function improperly, but it may be confusing to see this additional instance of Microsoft Project that does not appear to be doing anything.
