SYMPTOMS

When you use a Microsoft mouse that has a wheel in a game, the wheel button may not function the same as the middle button or the third button.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

• Microsoft IntelliPoint software is installed on your computer.
• You have assigned the wheel button to function the same as the middle or third button in the game.

Additionally, this problem occurs if software from a previous mouse is still installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Turn off Direct Input

If Direct Input is available in the game turn it off.

Note You may have to see your game manufacturer for instructions about how to do this.

Method 2: Remove Previous Mouse Software

To remove previous mouse software, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
   

Note If you use Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

1. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select any pointing device related software, and then click Remove.
3. Repeat these steps until there is no pointing device software is listed.

Method 3: Remove all Mouse Devices and Software and then Reinstall

Remove pointing devices. To remove pointing devices, follow these steps in order.

1. Verify Device Manager. To do this, follow these steps.

   Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

   1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
   3. Expand Mouse.
   4. Make a list of the entries listed under this type for Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer.
   5. Click Cancel to close Device Manager.

   Window XP

   1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click System.
   3. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
   4. Expand Mouse.
   5. Make a list of the entries listed under this type for Wireless Intellimouse Explorer.
   6. Click Cancel to close Device Manager.
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
   2. Click Restart the computer, and then click Yes.
   3. Press the F8 key, and then select Safe Mode on the Startup menu.
   4. When Windows finishes startup, close the message about Safe Mode.

3. Verify Device Manager and remove duplicate devices. To do this, follow these steps.

   Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

   1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click System.
   3. Click the Device Manager tab.
   4. Remove any devices other than the list that you made in the "Verify Device Manager" section earlier in this article.
   5. Restart the computer in Normal mode.

   Window XP

   1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click System.
   3. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
   4. Expand Mouse.
   5. Remove any devices other than the list that you made in the "Verify Device Manager" section earlier in this article.
   6. Restart the computer in Normal mode.
4. Remove the IntelliPoint software. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
      
      Note If you use Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
   3. From the list of installed programs, select Microsoft IntelliPoint, and then click Add or Remove.
   4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Microsoft IntelliPoint.
   5. Delete the folder in which the software was installed.
5. Download and reinstall the IntelliPoint software. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 4: Reassign the Wheel Button

Assign the wheel button to use a key on the keyboard that is not assigned to a game action or to a Microsoft Windows command. To do this, follow these steps.

Note You must install the IntelliPoint software before you follow these steps.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Mouse.
3. On the Buttons tab, configure the Wheel Button box to use a key on the keyboard that is not assigned to a game action or to a Windows command.
4. Click OK.
5. Start the game that you are trying to play, and then configure the keyboard and the pointing device assignments for the game.
6. Assign the actions for which you want to use the wheel button to the key on the keyboard that you assigned to the button in step 3.
