SYMPTOMS
When you run the New Membership Server Wizard and you enter the SMTP server name in the Message Builder Configuration dialog box, after you click Next, the following error message occurs:
CAUSE
This error message occurs because the SMTP service cannot be contacted, which may be due to one of the following reasons:
- The SMTP service may not be running.
- The target server cannot be found by the NetBIOS name of the server.
RESOLUTION
To troubleshoot this error, attempt to connect a Telnet session to port 25 of the SMTP server. If the server can be contacted through the IP address, but not through the NetBIOS name, then there is a name resolution problem. If neither method works, then the service is not responding.
Start the SMTP service using either the Internet Service Manager (ISM) in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) or use the NET START command.
