SYMPTOMS

If you use a switch box to connect two computers to a single Microsoft pointing device, the pointer may behave erratically when you try to switch between the computers.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you connect the pointing device to any switch box. This includes the Belkin brand of switch boxes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, connect the pointing device to an OmniView SE (model F1D074) switch box or another box such as the Belkin OmniCube optimized by their manufacturers for Microsoft IntelliMouse products or use a standard two-button style mouse.

Note To enable wheel functionality, you must connect the Microsoft pointing device to the PS/2 port on the switch box.

To troubleshoot issues with the pointing device and switch box, use the method that is appropriate for your situation.

Method 1

If the pointing device is no longer available when you switch to a different channel, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that the pointing device that you are using is correctly connected to the Console section of the KVM switch.
  2. Disconnect and then reconnect the pointing device cable that is attached to channel that you are experiencing problems to resynchronize the pointing device connection.
  3. Attach the pointing device directly to the computer with which you are experiencing pointing device problems.
  4. If the computer just awoke from standby or hibernation, allow up to one minute to regain pointing device function. Deactivate Power management schemes on the computer with which you are experiencing problems.
  5. Try swapping the pointing device with a different one.

Method 2

If the pointing device is not detected when you restart the computer, look at the cables and make sure that the cables are inserted correctly.

If the computer starts up fine, but the pointing device does not function, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the pointing device is plugged-in correctly.
  2. Make sure that the pointing device functions when directly plugged into the computer. You may have to restart the computer when you try this procedure.
  3. Try a different pointing device.

Method 3

If you switch from one port to another, and the pointing device movement is completely erratic, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that you do not have more than one pointing device driver installed. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press CTRL+ESC.
    2. Remove any IntelliPoint and Logitech software.
      • In Windows Vista, follow these steps:
        1. Use the ARROW keys to locate the Start Search box, type appwiz.cpl, and then press ENTER.
        2. In the list of Programs, use the ARROW keys to select Programs and Features, and then press ENTER.
        3. Use the ARROW keys to locate any IntelliPoint and Logitech software, press TAB to locate Remove, and then press ENTER.
      • In Windows XP and earlier versions, follow these steps:
        1. Use the ARROW keys to locate Run, and then press ENTER.
        2. In the Open box, type appwiz.cpl, and then press ENTER.
        3. Use the ARROW keys to locate any IntelliPoint and Logitech software, press TAB to locate Remove, and then press ENTER.

  2. Make sure that you do not have any pointing device drivers loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat files.
  3. Avoid moving the pointing device or pressing the button on the pointing device when you are switching ports on the E-Series KVM switch.
  4. You can rest the pointing device and resume correct pointing device movement. To do this, unplug the pointing device from the KVM switch for two or three seconds, and then plug the pointing device back in again.
