SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, you may experience unexpected video display behavior. This behavior may include, but is not limited to the following:

  • When you click a cell, the previously selected cell may retain a heavy black border or appear to be filled in black.

  • When you scroll through the timescale in a Gantt Chart view, you may see unexpected lines on the Gantt bars.

  • When you print, unreadable characters are displayed.

  • Task link lines may be drawn incomplete

NOTE: You can correct this behavior by minimizing and then maximizing the Microsoft Project window.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the DirectDraw option on your video driver has been disabled. DirectDraw is a video option that some manufacturers disable. Note: on some computers, this behavior is independent of the DirectDraw option. In this case, the only way to resolve the behavior is to minimize and then maximize Project.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Adjust the Video Display Colors Setting

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. In the Colors drop-down list, click True Color (24 bit).
  5. Click Apply.
  6. If prompted to test or apply the new settings, click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Close.

If this does not correct the behavior, repeat these steps except in step 4, substitute a different resolution for True Color (24 bit) such as 16 Color, 256 Color, or True Color (16 bit).

Method 2: Reduce the Video Hardware Acceleration

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. On the Performance tab, under Graphics, move the Hardware acceleration slider to a setting less than Full.
  6. Click OK twice.
  7. Click Yes to restart your computer.

Method 3: Update Video Drivers

Updated video drivers that may correct this behavior may be available by contacting the manufacturer of your computer or video card.
