SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows 98 Second Edition Updates, you may receive the following error message:

The Windows 98 files that are required for this upgrade cannot be found on your computer. You must install a complete version of Windows 98 before installing Windows 98 Second Edition.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you try to install Windows 98 Second Edition Updates on a computer running a version of Microsoft Windows other than Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, only use Windows 98 Second Edition Updates to update Windows 98-based computers.
