SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft IntelliType Pro software, the hot keys on the Microsoft Keyboard may not function as expected. For example, one hot key may perform an incorrect action or not function at all, while other hot keys function as expected.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a third-party keyboard control utility is running on your computer.

Examples of third-party keyboard control utilities are as follows:

  • Compaq Easy Access
  • E-machine's E-Board
  • Gateway MultiFunction Keyboard
  • Hewlett-Packard Multimedia Keyboard Utility
  • IBM Rapid Access
  • Logitech Key Commander
  • Packard Bell MediaSelect

Third-party keyboard control utilities are also provided with Acer, Gateway 2000, and Sony Multimedia computers.

This issue occurs because the scan codes issued by the keyboard are interpreted differently by each keyboard control utility.

The Microsoft keyboard hot keys have default program assignments when you first use them. Many of the default assignments require that you have a specific program installed, or that you are using a supported e-mail program, Internet browser or media player. For more information about supported products see the Microsoft Keyboard User's Guide installed with your keyboard software.

If you do not have the supported program you can still use the key by reassigning the key.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, quit any third-party keyboard control utility that is currently running on the computer.

To reassign a customizable key, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Keyboard control panel. To do this, use one of the following methods, depending on the operating system.
    • Windows Vista

Click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type keyboard in the Start Search box, and then click Keyboard in the Programs list.

    • Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows

Click Start, click Run, type Control keyboard, and then click OK.

  1. On the Key Settings tab, click the key that you want to change.
  2. Click Edit, and then follow the directions that appear on the screen to change the key behavior.

Note You cannot reassign some keys, such as the Sleep key, because the keys are system keys.

MORE INFORMATION

To prevent this issue from occurring, remove any third-party keyboard control utility that is currently installed on the computer. To do this, use the Add/Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

To learn more about how to troubleshoot keyboard problems in Windows Vista, follow the instructions in the "Troubleshoot keyboard problems" topic in Windows Vista Help and Support. To view the topic, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start [GRAPHIC: Start button], and then click Help and Support.
  2. In the Search Help box, type Troubleshoot keyboard problems, and then click Search Help.
  3. Click the appropriate topic.
