SYMPTOMS

When you try to start an MS-DOS-based program, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • Your computer is optimized for Windows 98. MS-DOS applications are not supported in MS-DOS mode.

    This computer cannot run MS-DOS programs. It has been configured by the manufacturer for optimal performance with Windows 98.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the manufacturer of your computer has optimized Windows 98 Second Edition for running Windows programs.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your computer to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.

MORE INFORMATION

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that install Windows 98 Second Edition on their computers may disable the options for starting an MS-DOS command prompt. These computers may not have the MS-DOS Prompt command on the Programs menu or the "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" option on the Shut Down Windows dialog box.
