SYMPTOMS

When Mciavi32.dll uses the MCIWndCreate() API call to open an AVI file, a handle leak occurs.

CAUSE

The MCIWndCreate API opens a handle to the registry key and does not close it, which causes the handle count to increase every time the API is called.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 5.
