SYMPTOMS

When you click Page Numbers on the Insert menu in Word 2000 to insert page numbers into a document that was created in an earlier version of Word, the page numbers may not print.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you are using the printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III that shipped with Windows 95. This does not occur if you use the LaserJet Series III driver from Hewlett-Packard.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Compatibility tab, under Options, select the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box, and then click OK.

    -or-

  • Click to select the page number frame in the document, and then click Frame on the Format menu. Then use the spin controls to increase the frame size to 0.2" for both width and height.

    -or-

  • Update your printer driver to the latest version of the Series III driver from the Hewlett-Packard Web site.
