SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to send a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) message to a long list of recipients through the SMTP service, an access violation may occur.

CAUSE

The recipients list in the To field is longer than 316 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual software update. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 2.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 5.
