Server Manager is Unable to Promote a BDC to a PDC

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 on a backup domain controller (BDC), you may not be able to promote the computer to a primary domain controller (PDC) using the Server Manager tool and the following error message may be displayed:

The specified network password is not correct.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the network password is not being sent as the correct parameter.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual fix. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5.
