MORE INFORMATION

When a document contains images, Word 2000 uses graphics filters to open and save images that are embedded or linked to the document.

When you click From File (on the Insert menu, point to Picture and click From File) to insert an image into a document, one of the following events occurs:

  • If the image is in a format that Word recognizes (a native format), Word preserves the image in its original format.

  • If the image is in a nonnative format, and if a compatible graphics filter is installed, Word converts the image to a format that is native to Word.

  • If the image is in a format that Word does not recognize, Word displays a message and does not convert the image.

Some images in Word documents convert to different formats in Word 2000. This situation occurs when a Word document is saved in either of the following formats:

  • A previous Word format, such as Word 95 for Windows format
  • A different text format, such as WordPerfect 5.x format.

When a file is saved in a previous Word format or a different text format, Word 2000 converts the nonnative images to Windows Metafile (WMF) format.

Graphics filters that are native to Microsoft Word

The following graphics formats are native (built-in) to Microsoft Word 2000 and do not require a separate filter to be installed:

  • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
  • Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
  • Macintosh PICT
  • Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
  • Windows bitmap (BMP)
  • Run-length encoded (RLE)
  • Device-independent bitmap (DIB)
  • Windows Enhanced Metafile (EMF)
  • Windows Metafile (WMF)

To install these graphics filters, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Install on first use

When you attempt to insert a graphic whose filter is not installed, the following message appears:

Microsoft Word can't import this graphic. This feature is currently not installed. Would you like to install it now?

When you click Yes, Word installs the graphics filter and then inserts the selected graphic.

Method 2: Run setup

Use the following steps to install the "Install on First Use" (Advertised) graphics filters:

  1. Quit Word and all the Microsoft Office applications.
  2. On the Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office 2000 (or Microsoft Word 2000) and click Add/Remove.
  5. In Maintenance Mode Setup, click Add or Remove Features.
  6. Click to expand Converters and Filters.

Note To expand, click the plus sign to the left of an item.

    • Click to expand Graphics Filters. Click the appropriate graphics filter icon, and select Run from My Computer.
    • Click the Graphics Filters icon and select Run all from My Computer.
