SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP), the following error message appears during installation:

Incorrectly registered, run 'regsvr32.exe' to register.

This error message can appear multiple times. You may also see error messages similar to the following:

Adding ODBC DSN entry for ADVWORKS.

-or-

Adding ODBC DSN entry for ADOsamples.

After you install ASP, some FrontPage database features may no longer work correctly. For example, when you view the Database Results Region in a Web browser, the following error message appears:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01b6'.
Object doesn't support this property or method: 'fp_rs.State'
/_fpclass/fpdbrgn1.inc, line 181.

Or, the Database Results Region may simply return no records when you view a page that contains a query and that you know should return records.

In addition, the Saved Fields tab of the Save to Database form field handler is unable to obtain a list of fields in the target database.

These problems do not occur if you clear the ODBC 3.0, ADO, and OLE DB check box when you install ASP.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the following conditions are true:

  • Your Web server is based on:

    • Microsoft Internet Information Server version 3.0.

      -or-

    • Microsoft Personal Web Server version 1.0.

    -and-

  • You installed Microsoft FrontPage 2000 or Microsoft Office 2000.

    -and-

  • You installed ASP after you installed FrontPage or Office.

The installatin of ASP after you install FrontPage or Office overwrites critical registry entries needed for the FrontPage database features to work correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: Repair the FrontPage or Office Installation

Run the FrontPage 2000 or Office 2000 Setup program to repair the FrontPage or Office installation. You can also repair your installation from any Office program. To do this, click Detect and Repair on the Help menu of the Office program.

Method 2: Reapply Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)

Download and install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.1 or later. For additional information and to obtain this file, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 3: Upgrade Your Web Server

The Microsoft Windows NT Option Pack contains both Internet Information Server version 4.0 and Microsoft Personal Web Server version 4.0. Note that Microsoft Personal Web Server does not support remote authoring in FrontPage. And, it does not provide a security architecture or an FTP service.

STATUS

If you select the ODBC 3.0, ADO, and OLE DB check box during installation of ASP, existing registry entries related to database components are not preserved. Therefore, you can prevent this problem if you clear this check box when you install ASP.
