SYMPTOMS
If you download a PostScript file created by Publisher 2000 to a Raster Image Processor (RIP), it may print Positive, Emulsion Up even though you configured the RIP to print Negative, Emulsion Down.
Similarly, a file might print Negative, Emulsion Down even if you configure the RIP to print Positive, Emulsion Up.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the PPD (PostScript Printer Definition) file used to create the PostScript file contains a *MirrorPrint or *NegativePrint option, and if the RIP uses PostScript preambles to change the Positive/Negative and Emulsion Up/Emulsion Down settings.
NOTE: This problem is not unique to Publisher 2000. It can occur in any program that creates PostScript files through the Windows PostScript Printer driver (instead of writing the PostScript itself.)
WORKAROUND
Method 1 (Windows 95 or Windows 98 only)
Use a PPD file that does not contain *MirrorPrint or *NegativePrint options. Publisher 2000 includes a general purpose Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter PPD file (Msgenbw.ppd). This is one PPD file that does not include the *MirrorPrint or *NegativePrint options. To install this file:
- On the Start menu, point to Settings and then click Printers.
- Double-click the Add Printer Wizard.
- Follow the instructions on screen. When the Wizard asks you for the manufacturer and model of the printer, click Have Disk.
- Click Browse.
- Browse to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder (or to whatever folder you installed Publisher 2000 to.) Click OK.
- Click OK again.
- On the Printers list click MS Publisher Imagesetter. Click Next.
- Follow the instructions to complete the Wizard.
To use this PPD:
- In Publisher 2000, on the File menu click Print.
- Click MS Publisher Imagesetter on the list of installed printers.
- If you click Advanced Print Settings, you can change anything you want to on the Publication Options tab, but don't change anything on the Device Options tab.
- Make any other changes you want to the Print Settings dialog box and then click OK.
Method 2 (Windows NT only)
Use the Adobe PostScript driver for Windows NT and turn on the Archive setting in the PostScript printer driver's Properties dialog box.

- In Publisher, on the File menu click Print.
- Click the printer driver you wish to use on the list of installed printers. Click the Properties button.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down until you see the PostScript Options entry.
- Click PostScript Output Option.
- In the Change 'PostScript Option Setting' list click Archive format.
- Click OK.
- Do not change any setting on the Device Options tab of the Advanced Print Settings dialog box, but make any other settings changes you want.
- Click OK.
Method 3: Don't override Publisher's settings
If you want to print (for example) Negative, Emulsion Down from Publisher, you can click the appropriate check boxes on the Device Options tab of the Advanced Print Settings dialog box. When you send the resulting PostScript file to your RIP, don't try to override the settings.
MORE INFORMATION
Many prepress shops prefer the PostScript files they receive to be created with Positive, Emulsion Up settings. If the final output is to be Negative and/or Emulsion Down, they override the settings saved in the file through their RIP software.
