SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you insert a WMF (Windows Metafile) image file into the header, footer, or legend, the image may not display or print as expected.

In addition, when you try to print or print preview the project, you may receive the following error message:

You cannot print or preview because the print area of the page is too small. Try one of the following:

- Decrease the page margins.

- Decrease the scaling percentage. On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Page tab. Under Scaling, decrease the number in the % Normal Size box.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you insert a WMF image in the header, footer or legend. When you do this, Microsoft Project may resize the image to be larger than can fit on a single page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, convert the WMF image to a bitmap image. To do this, first insert the WMF image in another program such as Microsoft Word. Use the other program to resize the image to the proper dimensions, and then select and copy the resized image. Next, follow these steps to paste the image into Microsoft Project 98:

  1. Open the header, footer, or legend area where you want to insert the image.
  2. Click in the editing box where you want to paste the image.
  3. To paste the image, either press CTRL+V or right-click the editing box, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.

NOTE: Before you can paste the converted image, delete the oversized image from the editing box in the header, footer, or legend area. To do this, open the editing box; click anywhere in the visible portion of the image, and press DELETE.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You may be unable to adjust the image size because resizing handles may not be visible in the editing box where you inserted the image. When you click Print Preview, only a portion of the image is visible in the page area. If you print the project, printing may be extremely slow, only partial pages may print, or you may get a printer memory overflow error.
