The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Update, used with: - Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 5 for Windows 98

SUMMARY

You may receive a Control Required or Cannot Display Page error message when attempting to access the Windows Update Web site.

CAUSES:

THIS MAY OCCUR IF:

  • You have chosen not to download the ActiveX Controls offered by Windows Update when accessing the Web site.
  • Your Internet Security settings are not set to allow download of the ActiveX Controls.
  • You are attempting to use the Products Update portion of the Windows Update site (see Q194599).
  • The site control is missing or is damaged on the system. This could be caused by a problem with code download or files that it uses like winverifytrust (Internet Explorer 4.0).

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

For best results, please follow the steps as they are outlined here.

CLEAR THE CACHE AND HISTORY USING THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  1. Click View (If using Internet Explorer 4.0) or Tools (If using Internet Explorer 5.0).
  2. Click Internet Options and then Click the General Tab.
  3. In the Temporary Internet Files section, Click Delete Files.
  4. In the History section, Click Clear History.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Start and then Click Run.
  7. Type “explorer” (without the quotation marks) in the dialog box and Click OK.
  8. In the left-hand frame, click the ‘+’ next to the Program Files folder.
  9. In the left-hand frame, right-click the WindowsUpdate folder and Click Delete.

REMOVE WINDOWS UPDATE CONTROLS:

For Windows 95 and Windows 98

  1. From Start/Run type:

    “regsvr32 /u c:3is.dll”

without the quotation marks.

  1. Delete wuv3is.dll from the:

    c:directory by doing the following:

    • Click Start, then Click Find/Files or Folders.

    • Perform a search for the wuv3is.dll and right-click it and then select delete.

  2. Delete the Windows Update directory under:

    c:files again.

For Windows NT

  1. From Start/Run type:

    “regsvr32 /u C:3is.dll”

without the quotation marks.

  1. Delete wuv3is.dll from the:

    c: directory by doing the following:

    • Click Start, then Click Find/Files or Folders.

    • Perform a search for the wuv3is.dll and right-click it and then select delete.

  2. Delete the Windows Update directory under:

    c:files again.

IF YOU CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THE “CANNOT DISPLAY PAGE” ERROR

Enable all Active X Security by doing the following.

FOR INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0:

  1. Click View on the top toolbar in Internet Explorer
  2. Click Internet Options and then click the Security tab
  3. Choose the “Custom” security setting and then click “Settings”
  4. Select Enable for all Active X Controls and Plug-Ins
  5. Close Internet Explorer and reopen it
  6. Click Start and then click Windows Update

FOR INTERNET EXPLORER 5.0:

  1. Click Tools on the top toolbar in Internet Explorer
  2. Select Internet Options and then click the Security tab
  3. Click on the “Custom Level?”
  4. Select Enable for all ActiveX controls and plug-ins
  5. Click OK, then click OK again
  6. Close Internet Explorer and reopen it
  7. Click Start and then click Windows Update

NOTE: Be sure to set your security settings back to medium before accessing any website outside of Microsoft.

IF YOU STILL RECEIVE EITHER ERROR MESSAGE:

  1. Connect to the site below to see if you are now able to view applets:

  1. If you are not able to view applets at the site above:

Install the newest version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine, build 3167 by following the steps below:

OPTION 1:

  1. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
  2. If you are unable to access this Web site, see option 2 below:
  3. Click Product Updates
  4. Click Critical Updates on the left-hand column
  5. Check the box to the left of Microsoft Virtual Machine.
  6. Click Download
  7. After the Virtual Machine is successfully installed, restart your system for the upgrade to take effect.

IF YOU DO NOT SEE THIS LISTED

You already have the most current version and do not need to reinstall.

NOTE: Please notice there is also a Microsoft Virtual Machine Beta available for download. Please note that the Beta version receives limited support via our Newsgroups.

OPTION 2:

  1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm31.htm to download the newest version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine 3167.
  2. You should see an End User License Agreement (EUL) near the bottom of the page.
  3. Once you have reviewed the EULA, click “I Accept: Download the Microsoft…”
  4. You should now be at: http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/java/vm/3167/msjavx86.asp which will specify the Virtual Machine build 3167 at the top of the page.
  5. Click MSJavx86.exe listed to the right of the location closest to you.
  6. When prompted, choose to save the file to disk
  7. Locate this file on your system and open it. This will install the Virtual Machine on your system.
  8. After the Virtual Machine is successfully installed, restart your system for the upgrade to take effect.

CHANGE SECURITY SETTINGS BACK TO ORIGINAL SETTING:

FOR INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0

  1. Click View on the top toolbar in Internet Explorer
  2. Click Internet Options and then click the Security tab
  3. Choose the security setting of your choice (Medium is recommended) and then click Settings
  4. Select Enable for all Active X Controls and Plug-Ins
  5. Close Internet Explorer and reopen it

FOR INTERNET EXPLORER 5.0:

  1. Click Tools on the top toolbar in Internet Explorer
  2. Select Internet Options and then click the Security tab
  3. Click on the “Custom Level?” button
  4. Under “Reset custom settings”, choose the security setting of your choice (Medium is recommended) and then click the Reset button next to the pull-down menu
  5. Select Enable for all ActiveX controls and plug-ins
  6. Click OK, then click OK again
  7. Close Internet Explorer and reopen it

ACTIVEX CONTROLS:

ActiveX Controls are the third version of OLE controls (.OCX), providing a number of enhancements specifically designed to facilitate distribution of components over high-latency networks and to provide integration of controls into Web browsers. These enhancements include features such as incremental rendering and code signing, to allow users to identify the authors of controls before allowing them to execute.

In Windows Update, ActiveX Controls are used to identify which components are already installed in your system, and which ones would provide additional functionality for your system.
