SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade to Windows 98 from within Microsoft Windows 3.0 using the full retail version of Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

Windows 98 Setup requires Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later. Quit Windows and type Setup /D at the MS-DOS command prompt.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Setup requires Windows version 3.1 or later to upgrade from within the Windows graphical user interface (GUI). To upgrade Windows 3.0 you must run Windows 98 Setup from MS-DOS.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit Windows 3.0 and type setup /d at the MS-DOS command prompt.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the /d switch, Windows 98 Setup does not use the current Windows settings in the Win.ini and System.ini files. If you have programs that write information to these files, those programs may not work correctly after you install Windows 98. It may be necessary to reinstall your programs.
