SYMPTOMS
When you hold down the CONTROL key and click a misspelled word in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the screen momentarily freezes, and then a small box displays Word Help, but the box is shaded.
CAUSE
Apple Data Detectors (which includes the Contextual Menu Enabler extension) is installed. When Apple Data Detectors is installed, one of two things will happen in Word:
- When you press the CONTROL key and click within a Word document, the Apple shortcut menus are invoked rather than the built-in Word shortcut menus. -or-
- The built-in menus in Word are available, but the Apple shortcut menus (and Apple Data Detectors) are unavailable.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use the workaround appropriate for your version of Apple Data Detectors.
Apple Data Detectors 1.0.2 or Later
You can turn off contextual menus in a specific program. To disable the functionality of the Contextual Menu Enabler within Word, follow these steps:
- From Word, click the Help menu, and click "Turn off Contextual Menus in (Word)."
- Press the CONTROL key and click to activate the shortcut (contextual) menus in Word.
NOTE: Because the "Turn off Contextual Menus in (Word)" Help menu item is added by the Contextual Menu Enabler and not Office, it cannot be assigned a keyboard shortcut or macro button like other menu items, nor can it be removed from the Help menu.
Apple Data Detectors 1.0.1
Apple Data Detectors version 1.0.1 does not include an option to disable contextual menus in a specific program and will always override the built- in Word shortcut (contextual) menus. The only workaround in this earlier version is to disable the Contextual Menu Enabler and restart your computer.

This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition and Apple Data Detectors versions 1.0.1 and later.

Apple Data Detectors (ADD) is software that recognizes and acts on certain types of information in a document. ADD installs an extension called Contextual Menu Enabler. This extension allows Apple system contextual menus to work in programs that do not directly support them, such as Microsoft Word programs (which contain their own contextual menus). When you press the CONTROL key and click in a Word document, the Contextual Menu Enabler overrides the built-in contextual in Office menus and presents the Macintosh operating system shortcut (contextual) menu instead.
Apple Data Detectors are an add-on to the Macintosh operating system version 7.6 or later on computers with a PowerPC processor. This article applies to Power Macintosh and compatible computers running Office 98, on System 7.6 or later with Apple Data Detectors installed.
The original version of ADD 1.0.2 contained version 1.0.3b1 of the Contextual Menu Enabler and was later removed from distribution by Apple. To ensure Office compatibility, obtain the latest version of ADD (as of 3/17/98, the most recent version is Apple Data Detectors 1.0.2 with Contextual Menu Enabler 1.0.3).
