SYMPTOMS

When you use the Visual Basic for Applications Selection property to return text from a sentence, the paragraph mark is not included. By contrast, when you use the Sentences collection to return text of a sentence, the paragraph mark is included.

CAUSE

Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied. This includes, but is not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. This article assumes that you are familiar with the programming language that is being demonstrated and with the tools that are used to create and to debug procedures. Microsoft support engineers can help explain the functionality of a particular procedure, but they will not modify these examples to provide added functionality or construct procedures to meet your specific requirements. The following macro demonstrates this behavior. The first message box will display 0 (zero) indicating that no paragraph mark is contained within the selection. The second message box will display 12 indicating that a paragraph mark is found within the selection whose position within the selection is the twelfth character.

    Sub SentencesCollection()
      ActiveDocument.Range.Text = "Sentence 1." & vbCr & "Sentence 2."
      Selection.MoveRight wdSentence, 1, wdExtend
      MsgBox InStr(1, Selection, vbCr)
      MsgBox InStr(1, Selection.Sentences(1), vbCr)
   End Sub
