DESCRIPTION
-----------

Remove Office 98 helps you find and remove pre-release and current versions
of Office 98 that you no longer need on your computer. Unlike the Remove
option in the Microsoft Office Installer, Remove Office 98 will completely
clean your drive of all system extensions, control panels, shared
libraries, and preferences from a previous installation. In addition, you
are provided with the option of deleting shared components and then
removing the Microsoft Office 98 folder installed to that drive. When
completed, you should be ready to reinstall the latest releases of your
Microsoft applications.

Remove Office 98 will only completely remove components installed with the
Microsoft Office Installer and Value Pack Installer that came with the
following programs:

 - Microsoft Office 98 (including all Early Test releases and Betas)
 - Microsoft Word 98
 - Microsoft Excel 98
 - Microsoft PowerPoint 98

VERSION 1.1 RELEASE NOTES
-------------------------

A problem has been identified with the original Remove Office 98 utility
provided in the Value Pack when used under certain circumstances. The
utility is designed to remove copies of Office 98 by finding the library
called "Microsoft Office 98" and moving the Office 98 installation that
surrounds it to the Trash. The Microsoft Office 98 library normally resides
in the Microsoft Office 98 folder, but if a user mistakenly moves this
library to the Extensions folder, and then subsequently launches the
utility, the System Folder rather than the Microsoft Office 98 folder will
be moved to the Trash.

The problem will only be experienced if a user manually moves the Microsoft
Office 98 library to the Extensions folder and then subsequently runs the
Remove Office 98 utility from the Value Pack. This file never gets
installed by Office into the System Folder and moving this file also causes
some features of Office 98 to stop working. While the problem is easily
avoided by leaving the Office 98 files where they are installed, due to the
potentially extreme consequences of this problem we are taking it very
seriously and suggest customers not use the Remove Office 98 utility until
after downloading this updated version.

Please note that Remove Office 98 is an administrative utility that is used
to quickly and completely remove Office 98 from your computer as
preparation for a clean install. This program is not installed with Office
98, nor is it installed by the Value Pack Installer. Most end users will
never need to run this utility and the update will not affect the
functionality of the main Office 98 applications in any way. In addition,
users may also uninstall Office 98 using the Remove option from the
Microsoft Office Installer. This method is much less aggressive about
removing files than the Remove Office 98 utility.

Change notes
------------

1. Copies of the Microsoft Office 98 library found in the System Folder or
the Trash folder will no longer be used to identify Microsoft Office 98
   installations.

2. Rather than move entire folders identified to contain Office components
to the Trash, the Remove Office 98 v1.1 utility will only dispose of
files and folders within that folder that Office would have installed,
preserving any other files or folders placed there by the user. If the
folder is found to be empty when this is finished, it will be deleted.

3. The option to preserve shared preferences has now been expanded to
include shared libraries. Selecting Keep when prompted will now allow
applications dependent on OLE, ODBC or Internet Explorer will continue
to function after Office 98 is removed.

4. If the Microsoft Office 98 shared library is found in the Extensions
folder, it is now cleaned up.

5. Several additional Value Pack components (like ODBC) are now cleaned up.

6. Only one copy of Office 98 is now removed per run.
