SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Office 97 for Windows programs, when you point to an item on a menu, no information about the menu item appears in the status bar.
WORKAROUND
To view help for a particular menu item, perform the following steps:
- On the Help menu, click What's This. Or, press SHIFT + F1.
The mouse pointer changes to a question mark.
- On the File menu, click Open.
The Open (File menu) quick tip appears.

In the programs included in earlier versions of Microsoft Office, such as programs included in Microsoft Office 4.2 and 4.3, and Microsoft Office 7.0, when you point to an item on a menu, a brief description that summarizes the functionality of the menu item appears in the status bar.
For example, in Microsoft Excel 7.0, if you click on the File menu, and then point to Open, the following text appears in the status bar:
Opens saved document
In Microsoft Office 97 programs, no text appears in the status bar when you point to an item on a menu. This functionality is not available in any of the Microsoft Office 97 programs.
