"Cannot Start the Converter" on Word NT Running on DEC Alpha |

SYMPTOMS
When opening a foreign file in Word for Windows NT running on a DEC Alpha platform, you may receive one or more of the following errors messages:
Cannot start the converter. (EXCEL32.CNV)
Cannot start the converter. (DBASE32.CNV)
Cannot start the converter. (LOTUS32.CNV)
The foreign file will open correctly, unless it is a Microsoft Excel, dBASE, Lotus, or Write file.
NOTE: Opening a Write file will cause an Application Error or Dr. Watson error, and Word will shut down.
STATUS
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUND
Remove the Microsoft Excel, dBASE, and Lotus converters from the C:\WINNT35\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV folder, where C:\WINNT35 is the Windows folder.
