SYMPTOMS
When you try to use the Works spelling checker function, you receive one of the following error messages:
CAUSE
The error messages may occur for one or more of the following reasons:
- The spelling checking accessories are not installed.
- Some or all of the spelling checker program files have been removed from the Proof folder (see step 9 below for list of files).
- The Windows 95 registry contains incorrect information.
RESOLUTION
To end the error messages, remove and reinstall the spelling files. To remove and reinstall the files, do the following:
- Save your work and exit Works.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Works 4.0 or 4.5, and then click Add/Remove.
- Works Setup starts in Maintenance Mode. Click Add/Remove.
- Clear the Program Files and Proofing Tools check mark boxes.
NOTE: After you clear the Program Files check mark, you receive the following message:This component is an essential part of the application. If it is not installed, the application will not run properly.
- Click Continue. Follow the screen instructions to remove the files and complete Setup.
- Repeat steps 2-7 to run Works Setup and reinstall the Program Files and Proofing Tools.
NOTE: In step 6 you need to re-select the Program Files and Proofing Tools options. Make sure the spelling files are installed before you start Works. The files are stored in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof
Where C is the letter of the hard drive where you installed Windows.
The required files are:Mssp2_en.lex 208,084 bytes 7/15/95 Mssp232.dll 143,360 7/15/95 Msth_am.lex 670,477 7/15/95 Msth32.dll 19,456 7/15/95
MORE INFORMATION
In Works 4.0 or 4.5, the spelling files need to be uninstalled or removed by Setup before they are reinstalled. Once the files are removed and you select the Proofing Tools box again, Works reinstalls just those files from the floppy disks or compact disc.
Most Setup applications check for the presence of system files before replacing them. If a corrupted file is present with the correct date, Setup may not replace it with the uncorrupted version.
