SYMPTOMS
When installing Office or PowerPoint, you may get the following message on PowerPoint disk 2
Cannot read Powerpnt.DL_
if TabWorks is your Windows shell. (If you are installing from Office disks, the message may appear on a different numbered disk.)
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do the following:
Exit Setup.
Open SYSTEM.INI in a text editor such as Notepad.
In the [boot] section, there will be a line similar to the following:
SHELL=<path>TABWORKS.EXE
Insert a semicolon (;) at the beginning of this line.
Add a new line immediately below it that reads SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE. The two lines should look something like this:
;SHELL=<path>TABWORKS.EXE SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE
Save SYSTEM.INI, then restart Windows.
Run PowerPoint Setup again.
