Office: No PowerPoint Viewer Disk with Office on CD

Q119105

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.2-CD, 4.3-CD, 4.3c-CD

SUMMARY

Microsoft Office for Windows, version 4.2-CD, 4.3-CD, or 4.3c-CD does not come with a separate PowerPoint 4.0 Viewer disk. If you want to distribute the PowerPoint Viewer (16-bit), you must create your own Viewer disk, or obtain the PowerPoint 4.0 Viewer disk from Microsoft.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are using version 4.3c-CD

Although Microsoft Office 4.3c-CD contains the PowerPoint Viewer files, they are expanded and contained in a .CAB file. The expanded files take up too much disk space to be extracted to a floppy disk for distribution. For more information about how to obtain the PowerPoint 4.0 Viewer disk, see the "Obtaining The PowerPoint 4.0 Viewer Disk" section at the end of this article. You cannot create a PowerPoint viewer disk for this version of Microsoft Office.

If you are using version 4.2-CD or 4.3-CD

Microsoft Office 4.2 and 4.3 on CD-ROM contain all the files necessary to create a PowerPoint Viewer disk. The files are stored in the directories listed in the followign table.

Version of Office Directory to copy
   ----------------------------------------------------

   4.3-CD <drive>:\SETUP.ADM\DISK31
   4.2-CD <drive>:\SETUP.ADM\DISK25

NOTE: <drive> is the drive where the Office CD is located.

Creating a Viewer Disk

To create a Viewer disk, copy the files from your Office CD to a floppy disk using the following steps:

  1. Insert a blank, formatted disk in your 3.5-inch floppy disk drive.
  2. Insert the Microsoft Office CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  3. Start File Manager.
  4. From the File menu, choose Copy.
  5. If you are using Microsoft Office version 4.3-CD, type the following in the From box

    <cd-rom drive>:\setup.adm\disk31\*.*

where <cd-rom drive> is your CD-ROM drive. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is designated as drive D, type:

    d:\setup.adm\disk31\*.*

If you are using Microsoft Office version 4.2-CD, in this step type disk25 in the place of disk31.

  6. In the To box, type

    <drive>:\

where <drive> is your floppy disk drive. For example, if your floppy drive is drive A, type:

    a:\

  7. Choose OK.

All of the necessary files should now be copied to the disk.

Installing the Viewer

To install the PowerPoint Viewer on another computer using this PowerPoint Viewer disk, do the following:

  1. Insert the floppy disk in the disk drive.
  2. From the File menu in Program Manager, choose Run.
  3. Type:

    a:\vsetup

  4. Choose OK.
