VSHARE.386 May Be Missing After Office Installation

Q117617

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.2, 4.3

SYMPTOMS

After you install Office 4.2 or 4.3, you may receive the following error message when you restart your computer:

You are missing a file that is necessary for running in 386 enhanced
mode: VSHARE.386

CAUSE

When you install Microsoft Office version 4.2 or 4.3, the following line is added to the [386 enhanced] section of the SYSTEM.INI file:

   device=vshare.386

If VSHARE.386 is not installed to the Windows System directory, you receive the error message.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do the following:

  • At the MS-DOS command prompt, decompress the VSHARE.38_ file from the appropriate Office Setup disk to your Windows System directory. Copy DECOMP.EXE from Office Disk 1 to your local hard drive. Now remove Disk 1 and put the Office Disk containing VSHARE.38_ into drive A. See the list below for the Disk number for the version you are using. For example, if the Office disk is in drive A, and your Window System directory is called SYSTEM, type the following:

    decomp a:\vshare.38_ c:\windows\system\vshare.386

VSHARE.38_ is located on the following Microsoft Office disks:

Microsoft Office Standard Version 4.2 Disk 25 (3.5 inch)

Microsoft Office Standard Version 4.2 Disk 30 (5.25 inch)

Microsoft Office Version 4.3 Disk 31 (3.5 inch)
