PRB: Documentation of sp_configure Devices Incorrect |
Q115585
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SQL Server version 4.2x
SYMPTOMS
The documentation of the sp_configure devices parameter on page 89 of the SQL Server for Windows NT Configuration Guide is incorrect. The manual states:
Reserved for backward compatibility. Do not change this option.
WORKAROUND
This section should read:
Controls the maximum vdevno that can be specified when creating database devices. Since vdevno's start with 0 for the master device, the maximum vdevno that can be specified is devices - 1.
For example, in a system with devices set to 10, the following command:
disk init name='test10',physname='c:\sql\data\test10.dat' vdevno=10, size=512
will receive the error:
Msg 5146, Level 16, State 1
The VDEVNO of 10 is out of range. The maximum VDEVNO allowed is 9.
An attempt to create a device with the same vdevno using the SQL Administrator create device menu will result in a 70000 error:
No available device numbers.
