Opening Word 6.0 for MS-DOS Documents in Word 2.0 for Windows

Q113485

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, versions 4.x, 5.x, 6.0

SUMMARY

To convert a Word 6.0 for MS-DOS document to and from Word 2.0 for Windows, save the document in Word 5.x for MS-DOS file format.

MORE INFORMATION

The Word 6.0 for MS-DOS file format has not changed from earlier versions, but Word 6.0 has been enhanced. This means two things: first, because the Word for MS-DOS converter has the same underlying format, you can open Word 6.0 for MS-DOS documents in Word 2.0 for Windows using the Word for MS-DOS converter; however, new Word 6.0 for MS-DOS features, such as tables, will not be converted. (The text will come across with formatting, but the table structure will be lost.)

RESOLUTION

For best results, in Word 6.0 for MS-DOS, save your documents in Word 5.x for MS-DOS format before you open them in Word 2.0 for Windows. Conversely, in Word 2.0 for Windows, save your documents in Word 5.x for MS-DOS format before you open them in Word 6.0 for MS-DOS.

To Save in Word 5.x for MS-DOS File Format

In Word 6.0 for MS-DOS:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  2. In the Format box, select "Word 5.5, 5, 4."
  3. Choose OK.

In Word 2.0 for Windows:

  1. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  2. In the Save File As Type box, select "Word for MS-DOS."
  3. Choose OK.

Note: Word 6.0 for MS-DOS includes both the Word 2.0 for Windows and the Word 1.x for Windows file converters. Word 6.0 for Windows includes a Word 6.0 for MS-DOS converter.
