A few thingz

Well for one, Firefox was not designed to compete with internet explorer, It was a continuation of the work achieved in the Mozilla Suite, which was a continuation of Netscape. AFAIK, it's goals were to create an extensible, compliant and fast browser which is also open source.

2.) The real numbers are: 35.3% Internet Explorer (14.7% IE 8, 11% IE 7, 9.6% IE 6), 46.5% Firefox, 11.6% Google chrome, 3.8% Safari, and 2.1% Opera as of February 2010. Source: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
