Summary:

The following problems occur when you convert line numbering between Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, and 2.0 and WordPerfect versions 5.0 and 5.1.

  1. When converting a document including line numbering from Word for Windows to WordPerfect, the measurement specified in the From Text field in the Format Section dialog box is directly converted to the measurement known as Position Of Number From Left Edge in WordPerfect.

From Text measures the distance between the right edge of line numbers and the left edge of lines in Word for Windows; whereas Position Of Number From Left Edge (SHIFT+F8, 1, 5) measures the distance between line numbers and the physical left edge of the page in WordPerfect. As a result, line numbers are not positioned as expected when converting to WordPerfect.

For example, if the left margin in Word for Windows is 3 inches and the From Left field in the Format Section dialog box is set to 1 inch, line numbers should be placed 2 inches from the left edge of the physical page. This is what occurs.

However, when the file is converted to WordPerfect, the 1-inch measurement from the From Left field is directly converted to WordPerfect’s Position Of Number From Left Edge. As a result, line numbers are placed only 1 inch from the left physical edge of the page in WordPerfect.

The inverse of this problem occurs when converting documents containing line numbers from WordPerfect to Word for Windows.

  2. If the From Text field in the Format Section is left to its default setting (Auto) when a file is converted to WordPerfect, the measurement for Position Of Number From Left Edge becomes 0 (zero).

Correcting each of the above problems requires manually changing the post-conversion value for From Text or Position Of Number From Left Edge to the correct value, depending on the direction of conversion.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 1.x and 2.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
