SYMPTOMS
The Local Security Authentication Server (Lsass.exe) process may quit unexpectedly (crash), and your computer may stop responding after you install Microsoft Windows NT system components or after you install additional client access licenses (CALs). This problem occurs immediately after you restart the computer following the installation.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if a timing issue exists that is related to the post-restart part of the Setup program. This timing issue may cause a delay in the initialization of the Security Accounts Manager (SAM). If a SAM query occurs before the SAM is ready to process the request, an access violation may occur in the Lsass.exe process.

If the computer has Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a installed, you can identify this problem by looking at the processor registers in the DrWatson.log file. Check the instruction pointer (eip) register to see if it matches the following value:

If the value matches this value, it is likely that you are experiencing this problem.
