SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows Live OneCare on a Windows XP-based computer, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
You have a damaged installation of Windows Defender.
RESOLUTION
Important Do not follow these steps on a Windows Vista-based computer. These steps are for Windows XP only.
- Use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall any installed versions of Windows Defender.
Note If Windows Defender does not appear on the list of programs when you try this, but Defender is visible and starts when you access it by clicking Start and then clicking All Programs, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
- Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
- Restart the computer, and then again try to install Windows Live OneCare.
- If that does not work, run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
- Visit the following Web site to download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
- Run the utility: Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
- Select any Windows Defender-related entries in the list, and then click Remove.
- Restart the computer, and then again try to install Windows Live OneCare.
