When you try to install the Zune software, you experience the following symptoms in the following order:

  1. The installation program stops at 95 percent, the installation program closes, and then you receive the following error message:

An error occurred while installing the Zune software. Close all open applications, restart your computer, and try again.

  2. After you restart the computer and then start to install the Zune software again, you receive the same error message.
  3. You receive the following error message in Event Viewer:

Zune -- Error 1609. Users is not a valid group. Could not apply security settings.

You experience this behavior if the Users group has been renamed.

  1. Rename the group that was formerly named "Users." To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In the left pane, expand System Tools.
    3. Under System Tools, expand Local Users and Groups.
    4. Under Local Users and Groups, click Groups.
    5. In the right pane, locate the group that was formerly named "Users."
    6. Right-click the group, and then click Rename.
    7. Type Users, and then press ENTER.
    8. Close the Computer Management window.
  2. Reinstall the Zune software.
